Actor Ryan Grantham had been sent to life in prison for the murder of his mother.
In a British Columbia court on Wednesday, 24-year-old actor Ryan Grantham was given a life sentence for the murder of his mother. Grantham, an actor who starred in Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 2010, made two appearances in Riverdale episodes in 2019. According to the CBC, Grantham admitted to shooting his mother Barbara Waite on March 31, 2020. He shot her mother when she was practising the piano in her Squamish townhouse, and he entered a plea of guilty to second-degree murder.
Justice Kathleen Ker of the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, who delivered the sentence, noted that victim impact statements—particularly while also noting that he had been dealing with severe mental health issues and had been viewing violent videos on the dark web.
Grantham’s saving grace, as Ker put it, was that he surrendered to the police rather than committing the murders he had ostensibly planned. After the murder, Grantham was shown in court in which he confesses to the murder and shows his mother’s body.
