Former "TODAY" co-anchor Katie Couric spoke publicly about her recent breast cancer diagnosis on Monday.

She expressed gratitude that it had been caught early and used her experience to encourage other women to have regular mammograms.

The 65-year-old Couric disclosed on Wednesday that she was diagnosed on June 21, had surgery on July 14, and started treatment on September 7.

After completing 15 days of radiotherapy, Couric reported feeling well. I was quite grateful because they were all advanced and the prognosis was extremely poor "She spoke

As thick breast tissue impacts how breast tissue appears on a mammogram, Couric also offered a message about the need for additional screenings for women with dense breasts like herself.

The thicker your breasts, the greater your chance of developing cancer, she stated in an editorial on her Katie Couric Media website.

Who will introduce legislation this month requiring insurance providers to pay for breast ultrasounds for patients who have thick breasts at no cost to the patient.

If women with thick breasts really received breast ultrasounds, all of these breast cancer diagnoses would occur considerably sooner, she claimed.

Now, Couric is advising other women to diligently schedule mammograms. Please get your yearly mammogram, she said in an essay posted on her website.
